  • Cambridge to Stansted by Train vs Taxi: Which Is B...

Going from Cambridge to Stansted by train is quick and cheap if you are travelling alone with a small bag. The direct service takes around half an hour and stops right under the terminal. A taxi costs more, but it starts at your front door, runs at any hour and carries your luggage for you.

The right choice comes down to your flight time, your luggage and how far you live from a station. A 4am alarm, two children and three suitcases change the maths quickly. This guide compares both options honestly, using current timetables, fares and airport rules.

We are 24/7 Airport Express, a Cambridge-based airport transfer company. We run Stansted transfers 24/7, so we see where each option works and where it struggles. Where the train is the better fit, we will say so.

Cambridge to Stansted by Train: Times, Fares and Stations

How often trains run and how long they take

Travelling Cambridge to Stansted by train is a direct trip with Greater Anglia or CrossCountry. Between them, trains run up to twice an hour on weekdays, with around 40 departures a day.

The journey takes roughly 25 to 40 minutes, and most trains take just over half an hour. Greater Anglia trains call at Cambridge South, Whittlesford Parkway and Audley End. CrossCountry trains are slightly quicker and only stop at Cambridge South.

Which Cambridge station should you use?

Most people going Cambridge to Stansted by train board at Cambridge station, south-east of the city centre. Trains also run from Cambridge North, but the first one leaves later, at around 05:35. Cambridge South, beside Addenbrooke's and the Biomedical Campus, has a first departure at around 04:48.

If you live in Sawston, Whittlesford Parkway may be closer than Cambridge. Saffron Walden residents often use Audley End. Villages such as Cottenham, Histon and Haverhill have no station, so you will need a lift or a local taxi first.

How much is the train?

For Cambridge to Stansted by train, Greater Anglia advertises fares from £9.50 each way, based on buying a return. Prices change with the time of day and how early you book. A railcard can cut up to a third off many fares, which helps students, couples and families.

First and last trains

On weekdays, the first train leaves Cambridge at about 04:45 and reaches Stansted at about 05:13. That timing is the biggest limit on Cambridge to Stansted by train. Weekend and bank holiday times are different. The last direct trains leave in the late evening, usually between about 22:00 and 22:50.

At the airport end, the station sits directly below the terminal, with lifts and step-free access to the platforms. That short walk is one of the train's biggest strengths. You can check live times and facilities on the National Rail Stansted Airport station page.

Cambridge to Stansted by Taxi: What You Get

By road, Stansted is about 30 miles from central Cambridge, mostly down the M11 to Junction 8. A pre-booked taxi usually takes 35 to 50 minutes in normal traffic. Allow longer on Friday afternoons, in bad weather or when roadworks close a lane.

Compared with going Cambridge to Stansted by train, the big difference is the start and end of the trip. Your driver collects you from your door and stops outside departures.

With 24/7 Airport Express, fares to Stansted currently start from £74 one way in a saloon. That price is for the car, not per person. The final fare depends on your address, vehicle and pickup time, so get an exact quote online.

Train vs Taxi vs Coach vs Driving: Side-by-Side

Here is how Cambridge to Stansted by train compares with a taxi, the coach and driving yourself. Figures were checked in October 2026 and can change, so confirm them before you travel.

One honest surprise: for very early flights, the coach can beat going Cambridge to Stansted by train. National Express lists a first coach from Cambridge Parkside at about 03:50, arriving at 04:35. It runs up to 11 times a day, though, so later choices are thinner than on the railway.

The Real Door-to-Door Picture: A Practical Example

Timetables only show station-to-station times. What matters is the whole trip, from your front door to the check-in queue.

Take a family of four in Cottenham flying to Faro at 07:15. They want to reach Stansted by about 05:15, two hours before departure. They have two large suitcases and two cabin bags.

  • By train: Cambridge North's first train leaves too late. So going Cambridge to Stansted by train means catching the 04:45 from Cambridge. To make it, they must leave home at about 04:15, with a lift or a local taxi. The train reaches Stansted at around 05:13, just inside their target. Any delay wipes out the margin.
  • By taxi: a pickup at about 04:15 gets them to departures between roughly 04:50 and 05:05. The bags go into the boot once and come out at the terminal. There is no connection to miss.

On paper, four tickets for Cambridge to Stansted by train may still cost less. But once you add a 4am lift or local cab to the station, the gap narrows. For this family, the taxi removes the riskiest step of the morning.

When Cambridge to Stansted by Train Makes Sense

  • You are travelling alone or as a couple with cabin bags.
  • Your flight leaves between about 08:00 and late evening, when trains run regularly.
  • You live within walking distance or a short bus ride of Cambridge, Cambridge North or Cambridge South station.
  • You hold a railcard, or you can book a cheaper advance fare.
  • You are happy to lift your own bags on and off the train.

When a Taxi Is the Better Fit

  • Your flight leaves before about 07:15, when Cambridge to Stansted by train is too late or too tight.
  • You land late, after the last train to Cambridge has gone. Our guide to late-night Stansted to Cambridge taxis covers the return leg.
  • Three or more of you are sharing, with checked bags.
  • You are travelling with young children, car seats or a pushchair.
  • You live in a village without a station, such as Cottenham, Histon or Haverhill.
  • You want the shortest possible walk with your luggage at both ends.

When to Leave: Flight Time vs Pickup Time

Most short-haul passengers aim to reach Stansted about two hours before departure. Always check your airline's own advice, especially if you have bags to drop. The table below assumes a short-haul flight and a pickup in central Cambridge. The last column shows whether Cambridge to Stansted by train would work for the same flight.

06:0002:45–03:00No. The first train arrives at about 05:13.
07:0003:45–04:00Only just. You would arrive with under two hours to spare.

Add 15 to 30 minutes if you live outside the city, travel with children or fly long-haul. For the very first departures, many travellers prefer an even earlier start. Our 6am flight guide sets out a full night-before plan.

Getting Dropped Off at Stansted

Going Cambridge to Stansted by train avoids drop-off charges completely. Cars are different. Stansted's Express Set Down area, right outside the terminal, uses number-plate cameras and charges for every visit.

Reports from summer 2026 put the fee at £10 for up to 15 minutes, with higher charges for longer stays. There is also a free set-down area in the Mid Stay car park, linked to the terminal by shuttle bus. Check current prices on the London Stansted pick-up and drop-off page.

If a friend drops you off, they must pay online by midnight the next day or face a £100 parking charge. When you book any airport taxi, ask whether the drop-off fee is already in the fare.

Choosing the Right Vehicle

Passenger numbers are only half the story. Luggage usually decides the car. Tell us exactly how many large cases, cabin bags and pushchairs you have when you book.

What Affects Your Taxi Fare

A starting fare is a guide, not a final price. These are the main things that change it:

  • Vehicle type: an Executive, Estate or Multi Seater costs more than a Saloon.
  • Time of day: an early-morning surcharge applies to very early departures.
  • Holidays: a surcharge applies on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
  • Waiting time: 7 minutes free at your home, then £6 per 15 minutes. At the airport, 30 minutes free, then £7 per 15 minutes.
  • Child car seats: £18 per seat, per journey.
  • Pickup area: fares vary by area, so Ely or St Neots is priced differently from central Cambridge.

What to ask before booking an airport taxi

  • Is the fare fixed, and what exactly does it include?
  • Is the Stansted drop-off charge included or added later?
  • Which vehicle will I get, and will all my bags fit?
  • Can you supply child seats, and what do they cost?
  • Which council licenses your drivers and vehicles?

For a closer look at road times and prices, read our Cambridge to Stansted taxi price guide.

Safety and Rules: Child Seats and Licensing

Child seat law works slightly differently in taxis and minicabs. If the driver does not provide the correct seat, children may travel without one, but only in a rear seat. Children aged 3 or over must wear an adult seat belt, while under-3s travel without one.

That is legal, but it is not ideal on a motorway. Booking a child seat in advance costs £18 per seat, per journey. The full rules are on GOV.UK's child car seat guidance.

Adults must wear a seat belt where one is fitted. Private hire operators, drivers and vehicles must all be licensed by a local council. It is fair to ask which council licenses yours.
